The christening of your child is one of the first pivotal events that your child will have. Plenty of pictures will be taken and a couple of tears might be shed as well. Most christenings were originally performed with the candidates naked; this practice died out in the Middle Ages. Christening is rife with symbolism. It is considered a form of rebirth, and the original nakedness was a reference to the nakedness in one’s entrance into the world through birth. The removal of clothing is representative of taking off the trappings of the sins of the self, so that Jesus can put on the “new man” or “new woman” for the candidate.
As this is a significant rite of passage for your child, consider some designer christening accessories to cement this important day. White symbolizes the purity and youth of the infant who is being baptized. Though white is traditionally used, and is also the most common color, pastels are also an acceptable option. However, the one rule of fashion that cannot be broken, even at this young age, is that black should be avoided at all costs.
As your baby is the center of attention this day, they should look the part. Baptismal gowns are long, white, and embellished with embroidery and trims. They are considered unisex. However, it is also appropriate to dress your baby boy in a white suit, or your baby girl in a white dress. Another great option that has come into the market in recent years are baptismal rompers. For your baby girl, accessorizing with sheer pantyhose may be appropriate if she’s wearing a shorter dress, or you are worried about her being cold. Little white booties are also a great touch to his or her christening outfit, and there are plenty of designer options that are often of higher quality than conventional booties. For your baby girl, considering buying her a white bow, or a little white cap to help keep her head warm. White bonnets are also a great nod to earlier traditions. If your child spits up regularly, investing in a sateen bib is a great way to keep the baptismal gown pristine, as well as a cute accessory. Sterling silver pacifier clips are also a great addition to holy occasions if your baby is using a pacifier, since ordinary pacifier holders are probably not suited to more sacred events. Consider investing in a designer christening accessory that will last for years to come for your child, such as a cross pendant. There are many variations on the cross pendant, some of which come with diamonds, and some of which come with pearls. As your child grows, this accessory will be a great token from that pivotal day. Christening outfits and accessories are often passed down as family heirlooms, so investing now would be wise so that numerous generations after your child’s can still use these accessories.
However, as the parent, you also must dress to indicate that you take this event seriously. That is not to say, however, that you need to look bland. For instance, small pearl earrings or small diamond studs are a great way to adhere to the white color palette without feeling too bland. Low white heels are another great way to add some interest to your outfit. Finally, as a nod to Kate Middleton at Prince George’s christening, feel free to wear a white or a cream fascinator.
