Girls Aloud On Tour: We Speak To The Stylist Behind The Glitzy Costumes, Alison Elwin

Posted on May 3, 2013 at 12:35 pm

A performance where the costumes combine rock chick, Jessica Rabbit and Victoria’s Secret Well it can only mean one thing, a Girls Aloud show of course! This Thursday, Girls Aloud kicked off their UK tour in Newcastle, the hometown of a certain band member, our frequent front-pager, Cheryl Cole. Grazia Daily caught up with the woman behind the corsets and frills, costume stylist Alison Elwin.

‘We’ve really gone all out with the costumes for this show,’ Alison excluslively told us. ‘There has never been an outfit that one of the girls has refused to wear. We’d never let it get to that stage as we’re consulting the girls constantly through out the costume-making process.  I propose the costume ideas to the girl and it’s common for them to want to adapt them slightly. Nicola [Roberts] often has a clear idea of what she wants – being very into the fashion scene.’

‘The girls have all grown up and gone their separate ways style-wise, but for the show we very much concentrate on the Girls Allowed collective identity – glitz, glam and extravagant! Of course, their individual styles do shine through as well. You wouldn’t catch Sarah [Harding] wearing one of Nicola’s baby blue mini-dresses with pearls’. Course not! Read on for details on the five fabulous fashion themes of the show…

1. Rock n Roll

The show opens with the rock chick theme. The girls are covered in gold, silver spikes and chains and the image is tough and hard-hitting. No prizes for guessing that ‘Sound of the Underground’ is performed in this leather-clad couture.

2. Victoria’s Secret

The next theme sees the girls writhing about in little more than lingerie. Inspired by the Victoria’s Secret Angels (oh yes), the girls sport gigantic wings and sparkle from head to toe. These costumes were designed by the swarovski-loving strictly come dancing stylist Vicky Barkess. Men all over the country will be pleased to hear that Cheryl can be seen strutting her stuff in a bra/mini skirt one-piece for this number!  The fun time song ‘Can’t Speak French’ fits this feathery theme like a dream.

3. Dark Futuristic

The corset cages come out for a darker, more seductive theme. Songs like ‘Untouchable’ and ‘On the Metro’ are performed in this attire. A corset cage sounds somewhat daunting…

4. Sixties

We all know the swingin’ sixties style is on it’s way back for the summer, so the girls embrace the monochrome madness for songs like ‘Something Kinda Oh’. Inspired by the Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2013 collection, the girls wear leather and checkerboard. Chic!

5. Glam

Red sequins, full length dresses and heart shaped necklines, it doesn’t get much more glamorous than the encore to this show. The Jessica Rabbit inspired extravagance ends the show with a glittery bang. How fabulous!

Instagram Pics Of The Day: Alexa Chung Gets Cuddly With Zayn Malik Plus Rihanna Celebrates Her Birthday With Chris Brown

Posted on May 1, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Alexa Chung is one very lucky girl. Not only has she got designers across the globe gagging to dress her, but she also got a sneaky cuddle with One Direction’s hottest member (sorry Harry!) Zayn Malik at the Brit Awards. We’re pretty sure Zayn didn’t mind getting cosy with the style icon – what a beautiful couple!

Chung isn’t the only one keen to hang out with 1D. Nick Grimshaw tweeted a photo of himself with Harry Styles as the singer made an appearance on his Radio 1 breakfast show and the pair are seen pulling matching goofy faces. Harry recently told Grazia Daily about his relationship with Nick: ‘We just get on really well from the first time we met we just had a laugh. There’s nothing weird about it. We’re both as much idiots as the other one, he’s a really really funny guy.’

Pop super star Rihanna didn’t make it to London for the Brits as she was celebrating her birthday with friends and family in Hawaii (lucky for some!). Despite not extending the invite to us she has revealed plenty of snaps including the cake, the balloons and intimate moments between herself and boyfriend Chris Brown.

And finally, it appears Mollie King of the Saturdays has fulfilled a childhood ambition of hanging out with the Backstreet Boys. The singer wrote a song for the boys’ forthcoming album and headed out to LA to be there while they recorded it. AJ Mclean tweeted a photo with the caption “Me and Mollie King from the Saturdays rocking new Backstreet Boys with the JAM. Gonna be huge.” As big as Backstreet’s Back Surely not!

Allison Williams, Liberty Ross, Anna Paquin: Best Dressed At Tom Ford’s Swanky Party

Posted on April 29, 2013 at 8:39 pm

Tom Ford is a man on a roll. Following an insanely successful London Fashion Week show last Monday, which man of the moment Justin Timberlake tweeted “Tom Ford Women’s Show… So sick. Killed it.” (sick and killed it are reportedly compliments across the pond), the designer hosted a cocktail soiree last night in beautiful Beverly Hills, California.

And which of Tom’s huge A-List fan base came out to show their support Only the crème de la crème of Hollywood natch. Our absolute, hands down favourite hot couple Sookie and Vampire Bill Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer were there, dazzling in black – we find it very hard to come to terms with her fabulous post-twins body in that cut-out dress. Sir Elton John and David Furnish were there too, sans baby of course, as well as Mr.Catwalk strut himself,  J. Alexander, Teen Vogue’s East Coast Editor-in-Chief Lisa Love (yes we only know her from watching The Hills too), Liberty Ross and Girls’ actress Allison Williams looking smoking in monochrome.

The party was hosted by Ford to support Project Angel Food, a charity that provides meals for people disabled or homebound by HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses. Take a scroll through our gallery to see all the attendees of last night’s Tom Ford bash…

If like us, you are interested in fashion books, magazines and history and think that hearing about the industry straight from some of its most influential figures sounds like fun – then you should definitely try and make it down to a fabulous event at the British Library in London next week on Friday night (March 1st). It’s called Fashion Flashback, A Scrapbook of Inspiration and it’s been produced by the library in conjunction with renowned art college and alma mater of just about every London designer; Central Saint Martins.

The evening will include for your delectation; a talk called In conversation with noted names in the world of the arts featuring; Editor of GQ Magazine Dylan Jones, Fashion Illustrator Tanya Ling and Fashion Authors Camilla Morton and Iain R Webb. They’ll be discussing all sources of inspiration as well as giving their insights into the industry, being interviewed by Cally Blackman, author and associate lecturer in history of dress and Hywel Davies, fashion journalist and author.

But that’s not all. There will be a live fashion show, featuring the exclusive designs of Central Saint Martins BA Fashion Print Students. So if you’ve ever wondered what the fashion collections of the future will look like, this is your chance.

There’ll be an exhibition of fashion magazines from down the ages from those amazing illustrated covers of Vogue going back a hundred years to the present day fashion press. Also promised is a selection of specially commissioned postcards on display, sent to the library by Central Saint Martins alumni and notable industry figures, (like this one from Gareth Pugh) as well as Christopher Kane, Sarah Mower, Alex Fury, Adam Selman and Mel Ottenberg.

And, bearing in mind it’s a Friday night, and as Oscar Wilde once said, ‘You can never be overdressed or overeducated’ you’re encouraged to dress in your best, and that there’ll be makeovers and make-up tips at ‘The Looking Glass of Fashion’ – a Cecil Beaton inspired beauty area sponsored exclusively by makeup brand Chantecaille. Oo la la! After visiting this, you’ll be very welcom to pop into the on-site photo booth to commemorate the occasion for posterity.

As no party is complete without some music, Princess Julia and Jeffrey Hinton will be taking to the decks for the night with Miss Dusty O playing hostess on the door.

All this and even more, go to make what sound to us like a pretty unmissable evening’s entertainment. If you’d like to know more details or book yourself a place, then simply head to The British Library website link to tickets. Price: £7.50 / £5 concessions
